Each way betting - What each way means in betting? Are each way accumulators worth it?

Each way bets are something which seem to scare away a lot of people, particularly outside of the world of horse racing. This is because many people are somewhat confused about what they do and how they work. Hopefully, on this page I am going to cast some of those doubts to one side and give you a decent overview of how each way betting actually works.

What is an each way bet?

Think of an each way bet as a two-part bet. These parts are:

  • Betting on the event happening i.e. betting on first goal scorer.
  • Betting on the event happening at some point i.e. the person you selected as the first goal scorer actually scoring, whether it is first in the match or not.

This means that you need to pay ‘double’ for your bet. This is normally a type of bet that is placed on horse racing as opposed to football, though. For example; betting on a horse ‘each way’ means that it is fine if the horse comes in the first three positions of the race.

Is it worth placing an each way accumulator?

Honestly, this is completely dependent on what you are betting on in the first place. One of the main reasons as to why people go down the route of an each way accumulator is that it provides them with a bit of ‘protection’ should one of the line bets not actually happen. As you may know, if you place an accumulator bet, you need to have everything on that bet happen for you to ‘win’. There is nothing more annoying than placing a bet like this, maybe with 10+ lines, seeing 9 of them eventualities come through, and the 10th doesn’t happen. An each way accumulator will mean that your bet still pays out. However, it will pay out at a lesser amount. That being said, at least you can still be thankful that you are getting a little bit of money put into your pocket and are not walking away empty handed.

In most cases, you should probably keep your each way accumulator bets limited to something where the event can ‘place’. As I mentioned before, a bet on the first goal scorer is good here (remember; if that person does not score at any time, you will still lose an each way accumulator. The event has to happen, just not the way you predicted it), or maybe a bet with horse racing or something like that. You will not be able to place a bet like this if you are simply betting on the winner of a match.

Obviously, you should only place the bet if the returns for every selection to ‘place’ is greater than the amount of money that you have staked total. For example; if the standard odds are 2/1, there is no sense in placing an each way bet because you will only ever get back exactly what you staked.

Finding the best each way bets

Thankfully, the vast majority of betting websites are going to offer each way bets on most events. So, this is not going to be that much of an issue. Since an each way bet is going to require you to put down double the stake for a single bet, then you are going to want to make sure that you choose a place which has decent odds. Although, I am positive that this is something that you are going to be doing anyway.

Just remember that since the stakes are a little bit higher with this type of bet, you need to be sure that the event is going to happen, no matter when it happens. For example; if you are betting on a football match, there is no sense in placing an each way bet that a defender is going to score a goal when he has not scored a goal in years. The odds are going to be fantastic, but the chances of it happening are so small that you should not place an each way bet as it is expensive. If you really fancy your chances for some baffling reason, then go for that outraight bet instead.
